Old school superzoom?
Kodak came out with this model this spring (2009). The camera very much follows the 'superzoom' design that was popular last year until Canon and Panasonic came out with thin super zoom digicams.
With a 1/2.33" sensor the camera does not event attempt being called a big league contender, and with physical dimensions of 90.5 × 123.7 ×105 mm, it definitely isn't compact.
The Z980 offers a 26–624mm equivalent zoom lens of a good optical quality, an a relatively bulky package.
Rivalry
Canon's
PowerShot SX200 has a 28-336mm equivalent zoom, same sensor size, HD video recording, but the optical zoom is locked during video recording. The canon has roughly the same width and height but is less than 4cm thick turned off and weighs 220 gram (Kodak: 10.5cm thick, 415 grams)
Panasonic's
TZ7 has a 25-300mm equivalent zoom, same sensor size as the other two, HD video recording capabilities with real time optical zoom and auto focus during video recording. The Panasonic is 3.3cm thick when powered off, and weighs 205 grams.
Telephoto zoom
spec-wise the Kodak clearly wins here, with an equivalent focal length up to 624mm. If that is what you're after, the Z980 should be your choice.
